Since 1999, the Bike Victoria Society (formally known as the Bike to Work Society) has educated over 5,000 participants in our comprehensive Bike Skills Courses. Our courses are customized for various ages and skill-levels and are delivered by our team of trained instructors at schools, community centers, libraries and workplaces. Courses include both in-class and on-road instruction that allow participants to build the skills and confidence needed for safe and enjoyable urban cycling. The Everyone Rides Gr. 4 & 5 program is specifically designed to encourage elementary students to bike to and from school safely. Position Summary:
We are hiring several instructors to join our ERG45 Bike Skills Instructor team this year. Cycling instructors work on a seasonal basis and teach our Everyone Rides Grades 4 & 5 in-school cycling courses. The work can be fairly physical and requires enthusiasm and high levels of energy. Candidates must have flexible daytime availability on weekdays. The spring season lasts from April-June, with the opportunity to teach again in the fall (Sept-mid-Nov). Other opportunities to teach in the summer may arise, however, this has not yet been confirmed.
Successful applicants must become Bike Right certified by attending and passing the Advance Your Ride cycling skills course from April 6-9. Fees for this course are paid by Bike Victoria. Additional, compensated on-site training will be provided before the first course begins.
Primary Responsibilities:
● Become familiar with the course curricula, equipment and materials, and methods for effective course delivery and student engagement;
● Set up and deliver courses in a professional, enthusiastic and fun manner; this includes communicating course requirements with school staff to ensure smooth program delivery;
● Motivate diverse youth and maintain their engagement during in-class and on-bike course delivery;
● Encourage youth and other program participants to see cycling as a viable mode of transportation;
● Communicate consistently and promptly with supervisors regarding scheduling, course feedback, and any incidents that occur while on-site;
● Maintain safety and risk mitigation practices.

Terms: This is a seasonal position. We are hiring new instructors for our spring season, which runs from April to June. Number of shifts vary from week to week depending on instructor availability and programming needs. Typically, we teach three courses a week, so your hours may fluctuate between 17-25 hours a week. Instructors must be willing to travel within the CRD and adjacent communities to instruct courses (owning a vehicle is not required), and can expect some early morning start times for travel to program locations. Successful candidates will have the opportunity to continue on our Bike Skills team in 2021, teaching our other Bike Skills courses outlined on our website.
Start date: Instructor training will take place from April 6-9 and course instruction will begin the week following.
Pay: $25/hr
