Update: Thanks for all your interest. We got some amazing candidates and held our 2021 AGM in Feb. If you are interested in volunteering, please see our Get Involved page.
We are seeking community leaders with a wide range of experience and expertise – plus a passion for human powered transportation – to join our Board of Directors. Beyond our board, we are also looking for volunteers who are interested in supporting the work of the Board through our committees.
Merger Note: In the Fall of 2019, the Greater Victoria Cycling Coalition merged with the Greater Victoria Bike to Work Society. We now operate under the legal name Bike Victoria Society while we work on a unified brand.
Background
As a merged group, the Greater Victoria Cycling Coalition and Greater Victoria Bike to Work Society offer fun and engaging programs like local cycling advocacy, group rides, Go by Bike Week/Bike to Work Week, bike skills training, webinars, bike parking, and more that help build and support a culture of cycling in Greater Victoria.
We are governed by a Board of Directors. We are currently looking to fill up to five open positions. The Board provides governance, leadership, fundraising, and financial oversight to our staff and operations. This is a “working” board that plays a critical role in the functioning of the organization.
The Board also has a number of committees that undertake the work of the Board, including Equity + Diversity + Inclusion, Membership, Governance, and Finance. All Committees play a crucial role in supporting our work.
The primary role of the board is not advocacy and members interested in advocacy can join here.
Qualifications
The qualifications, skills, and experience we are particularly in need of include:
- Equity, diversity, and inclusion
- Finance/accounting
- Marketing and communications
- Human resources
- IT management
- Organizational management
- Member relations
- Fundraising
- Board governance experience
Even if your skills and experience do not fall within these categories, we welcome and encourage you to submit an application. Enthusiasm, a willingness to learn, and the energy to take on new initiatives are also very valuable.
Expectations
Directors
Serving as a Director is a serious commitment with the following expectations:
- Attend and participate in regular Board meetings (approximately every two months)
- Actively participate in at least two Board Committees, with meetings for each committee every one or two months
- Each director should serve as either (i) an Executive member (President, Vice-President, Secretary, Treasurer), or (ii) Chair of one Committee
- Assist in Board and Committee work between meetings, including preparing meeting agendas and background documents/research and responding to emails in a timely way;
- Stay informed about the organization and attend at least one program event per year.
Committee Members
Serving as a Committee member is another great way to contribute your skills and experience with a lower commitment of time and energy. Committee members are expected to actively participate in the Committee they are part of and to take on Committee initiatives.
Diversity of experience
The Board of Directors is committed to recruiting and supporting skilled candidates for the Board and Committees that reflect the diversity of Victoria. We encourage applications from women, persons of colour, persons with disabilities, and members of the Capital Region District’s First Nations, LGBT, cultural, religious, and linguistic communities.
To apply
- Submit an application through our online Application Form by December 1, 2020. Please note, a resume/CV or summary of experience will be required but will not be shared publicly.
- Attend an interview with current Board members. We will reach out to arrange the date and time of this meeting, but they are scheduled for second week of December.
- Attend our AGM in January 2021.
Please note that based on the information you submit, as well as the interview, the current Directors will develop a slate of its endorsed candidates.
