The Locker – Toolkit

Our toolkit – Empowering Communities, One Bike Parking Solution at a Time.

Welcome to our toolkit

Welcome to The Locker’s Bike Parking Toolkit! As advocates for sustainable and active transportation, we understand the importance of providing secure bike parking options across communities. This page is designed to offer resources and guidance for the development and implementation of bike parking programs, whether for events or fixed locations. Stay tuned for ongoing updates to our toolkit as we continuously refresh our materials. We aim to empower communities to create safer, more sustainable environments for cyclists.

Our Story

Since 1997, we’ve been champions of cycling and micromobility solutions. As a non-profit organization born from the Greater Victoria Cycling Coalition and the Bike to Work Society in 2021, our commitment to fostering a cycling-friendly environment is unwavering.

In 2016, we introduced The Locker, a social enterprise aimed at providing secure attended parking for bicycles, scooters, and e-bikes at events. Our mission? To combat bicycle theft and enhance the event experience.

Fast forward to today, and we’ve proudly parked over 50,000 bicycles, expanding our impact through partnerships with municipalities and local organizations. Our bike parking program not only reduces bike theft but also provides peace of mind to riders, making cycling more accessible and secure for all.

Join us as we pedal towards a healthier, more sustainable future, one securely parked bike at a time.

SOP Template

Our SOP template provides a step-by-step guide for organizing event bike parking services. From initial setup to day-to-day operations and post-service wrap-up, this document outlines best practices and procedures to ensure seamless and efficient bike parking management in any setting.

Equipment List

Ensure you have all the necessary equipment on hand to set up a secure bike parking area. Our equipment list outlines essential items such as racks, signage, tools, and safety gear. Updates are happening in real-time! If you’d like more information about any of our equipment, reach out to us. We’re here to help!

Bike Racks

Our preferred choice is the MBB Valet Rack/Event Stand. These racks are constructed from lightweight yet durable aluminum, weighing 11.0 lbs. They are compact and portable, making them easy to transport and set up at various locations. Each rack can hold approximately 8 bikes, providing ample parking space for cyclists. With extended dimensions of 108” (9 feet), they offer sufficient length to accommodate multiple bikes securely. Spare parts are readily available, ensuring quick maintenance and repair if needed.

Bike parking tags

Our tags are designed with user convenience and durability in mind. Each tag pair consists of a large half for the bike and a small half for the user. They are color-coordinated for easy identification and include contact information in case the user forgets their bike. Each part of the pair is secured to small carabiners. The large half measures 3.5″x2″ and is crafted from 14mil KernowPrint Performance Polyester with a 1.7 mil SCUFFPro Matte Laminate on both sides, ensuring resistance to wear and tear. A hole is drilled at the top right corner of each tag, allowing easy attachment to the bike using the small carabiner. The small tag measures 2.25″x1.125″ and is constructed from the same durable materials. They are inserted into durable plastic key fobs (more information provided in the SOP template).

Tents

Our 10’ x 10’ tents are made from high-quality polyester with fire-retardant properties. The UV-proof tent top and back wall offer protection from the sun. A sturdy frame, along with printed canopy and back wall, provides stability and branding opportunities. Included roller bag, gutters, and tent connectors make transportation and assembly hassle-free.

Weights and Sandbags

Rubber weights or sandbags are essential for securing tents, signage, banners, racks, etc., especially in windy conditions. It’s recommended to pack more weights or sandbags than anticipated to ensure stability in unpredictable weather.

Table and Tablecloth

We use a 6ft folding table from retailers like Canadian Tire or Home Depot and we pair it with a branded tablecloth for a professional and cohesive appearance.

Fencing

We create a fully enclosed bike corral using banners attached directly to racks, snow fencing, or modular metal fencing (usually provided by bigger events). Ensure the fencing is sufficiently high to deter individuals from attempting to jump over and fully encloses the designated area.

Banners

Our 10ft banners, prominently featuring The Locker branding, serve multiple functions. We use them as fencing to demarcate the bike corral or as tent walls to provide additional shade and branding opportunities. They are secured using bungie cords for easy attachment to racks or other structures.

Signage

We direct users effectively with lightweight and durable plastic A-frame signs and corrugated plastic signs. Each sign prominently displays The Locker branding and directional arrows, strategically placed for maximum visibility and clarity.

Tubs

We store program materials, personal protective equipment (PPE), tools, and first aid kits in durable bins sourced from retailers like Canadian Tire or Home Depot. These bins also serve as storage for tags and other essential items needed for operation.

Staff Apparel

We ensure visibility and safety for staff members with high-visibility vests, t-shirts, and hats. These branded apparel items also help users and event staff easily identify your team members for assistance.

Chairs

We provide comfort for staff members during long shifts with lightweight and portable camping chairs. These chairs are easy to transport and set up, allowing staff to take short breaks when needed.

Wooden Squares

We use wooden squares to support electric bikes and other oversized bikes parked on grass surfaces. Placing a square under the kickstand prevents the bike from sinking into the ground, ensuring stability and ease of access.
